Install and permissions

Install Typeside and set up permissions and AI models to get started.

When you install Typeside and open it for the first time, a series of setup screens appears. Follow them to agree to the terms, grant permissions, and download the on-device AI model. You don't need an account.

Requirements

  • Mac with Apple silicon
  • macOS 13 or later
  • About 4 GB of free disk space for the AI model downloaded during setup (the on-device light model)
    • The Whisper dictation engine needs about 600 MB more.
    • Each on-device general model needs several GB more.

Install

  1. On typeside.app, click Download for Mac.
  2. Open the downloaded .dmg file.
  3. Move Typeside to your Applications folder.
  4. Open Typeside from the Applications folder.
Don't open Typeside straight from the .dmg window. The app runs from a temporary location, and it won't be set to open automatically when you log in to your Mac.

First launch

The "Typeside Settings" window shows these steps in order.

Agree to the terms

Click Get started, review the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then click Agree and continue. If you click Don't agree, the app quits.

Feature tour

Short animations show the main features. Click Skip to move on. To watch it again later, go to Settings ▸ General and click Open next to Replay onboarding.

Accessibility permission

Click Open System Settings, then turn on Typeside in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Accessibility. Once it's allowed, setup moves to the next step.

You can move on even if Speech Recognition on the same screen shows "Permission required". macOS asks the first time you use Dictation.

Screen context

Choose whether Autocomplete uses text on your screen. It's off by default. If you turn it on and click Continue, an explanation screen appears. Click Got it, and macOS asks for screen recording permission.

Prepare AI model

To download the on-device AI model used for Autocomplete, Improve, Translate, and Summarize, click Download. It's about 3.8 GB, and you only need to download it once.

If you click Later, you can't use Autocomplete, Improve, Translate, or Summarize until you download the model. To download it later, turn on Autocomplete in Settings ▸ Autocomplete. The model download starts automatically.

Done

When you see "You're all set.", click Get started to open the main window.

Main window

Click the Typeside icon in the menu bar and choose Open Typeside to open the main window. Typeside keeps running in the menu bar even after you close the main window.

  • Home: Shows the time you've saved, how often and on how many days you've used Typeside, and recent history.
  • AI: Manage skills and AI models. See AI models and Create a skill.
  • History: Review the original text and results of Improve, Translate, and other actions, and your Prompt conversations. You can search, or filter by feature. Click an item to show its original text and result. Select text to copy it. To remove an item, click Delete.
  • Settings: Click Settings at the bottom of the sidebar. In these docs, "Settings ▸ …" means this screen.

In Settings ▸ General, you can change these items:

  • Launch at login: Opens Typeside in the menu bar when you log in to your Mac.
  • Display language: The language of the app. The default is Follow system settings.
  • Exclusion: Choose apps where Typeside doesn't appear.

Permissions

Typeside uses these macOS permissions. Only Accessibility needs to be allowed on first launch. macOS asks for the others the first time you use the feature that needs them.

PermissionNeeded for
AccessibilityAll features
MicrophoneDictation, voice input in Prompt
Speech RecognitionDictation (Apple engine), voice input in Prompt
Screen RecordingAutocomplete with screen context in Autocomplete, Use screen context in Prompt

You can turn permissions on or off at any time in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security.

Updates

Typeside checks for a new version every hour and downloads it automatically. When the download finishes, a notification appears, and the top of the main window shows that a new version is ready to install. Click Restart now, or click the Typeside icon in the menu bar and choose Restart to update. If an update is ready when you open Typeside again, it installs right away.

You can see the current version in Settings ▸ About. Updating keeps your settings, skills, history, and license.

If the menu bar icon shows "Update failed — please download it manually", download Typeside again from typeside.app and replace Typeside in your Applications folder.

Uninstall Typeside

To use your license on another Mac, first click Unregister this device in Settings ▸ License.

Click the Typeside icon in the menu bar and choose Quit Typeside.

Move Typeside from your Applications folder to the Trash.

Uninstalling the app leaves your settings, history, and downloaded AI models on this Mac. To remove everything, choose Go ▸ Go to Folder in the Finder and move these folders to the Trash:

  • ~/Library/Application Support/ai.typeside.app: settings, skills, history, Usage stats, Tone personalization data, downloaded AI models
  • ~/Library/Logs/ai.typeside.app: app logs

API keys for connected services stay in your keychain. If you disconnect a service in AI ▸ Models before uninstalling, its key is deleted too. If you've already uninstalled the app, delete the items that start with ai.typeside.app in the Keychain Access app.
